Mauritania officially known as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a sovereign country located in Northwest Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, Western Sahara on the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali on the east and southeast, and Senegal on the southwest. Nouakchott is the capital and the largest city of Mauritania. Mauritania has major sources of water including groundwater, lakes, rainwater, rivers, snow, soil moisture springs, streams, water, waterfall, wetlands, etc. Mauritania has more than two lakes and a few water bodies. Some water bodies have developed as tourist spots. Many water bodies are small in area and contain a minimum volume of water. Most of these water bodies are fresh water and very few are salt lakes.
Mauritania contains more than 1,386 named mountains. The highest peak and the most prominent mountain is Kediet ej Jill which is about 915 meters (3,002 feet). The other major mountains in Mauritania are Oumm Chouera, Anguer es Seyala, Teniaggouri, Glelib el Hamara, Guelb Jdareyat, Montagne de Zarga, Garet el Kounta, Gour Amongjar, Tichilit el Ateg, etc.
